Catholic League President Bill Donohue on Tuesday criticized the American Civil Liberties Union for its "attacks" on President Donald Trump's free speech.

"It is one thing for politicians, pundits, and newspapers to call for the impeachment of the president, quite another when an organization that claims to be the preeminent free speech institution in the nation agrees," Donohue said in a press release.

"Among its complaints against Trump, the ACLU cites 'false statements' he has made; this is ironic given the false statements the Union itself makes in its impeachment resolution," he added. "It opens by saying the board of directors touts its 'commitment to nonpartisanship.' This is manifestly false."

The organization Sunday joined House Democrats in calling for Trump's impeachment, citing "impeachable offenses" committed by the president and violations to "his oath to preserve, protect, and advance the Constitution."

Trump, it said, also "poses a 'grave and imminent threat to civil liberties' by engaging in an extended pattern of bad-faith conduct designed to subvert the results of a democratic election" and repeatedly made false statements about voter fraud and "improprieties designed to undermine the legitimacy of the election results."
