JFK Airport Workers Sickened After Opening Package

Sunday, 11 August 2013 05:06 PM EDT

The FBI was called in to New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport after at least two customs agents were sickened on Sunday after opening a package at a postal processing facility, ABC News Radio reported.

Port Authority officials say the air tested positive for nerve gas, but that does not necessarily prove that some sort of attack was intended, ABC News said. The chemical found is more likely a standard-use chemical that shouldn’t have been in the mail like a solvent or degreaser.

A New York Daily News report claimed the package initially tested positive for VX nerve gas – a substance that can be used as a weapon.

Two people were taken to Franklin General Hospital in Valley Stream shortly after 3 p.m., according to FDNY Emergency Medical Services. Both were in good condition.

FBI spokesman J. Peter Donald said the two Customs and Border Patrol employees will be screened as well. The FBI testing is following some initial testing that indicated a possible cause for concern.
