New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo is keeping the state shut down.
In a press conference Thursday, the governor announced plans to keep non-essential businesses closed and extend the state’s stay-at-home-order until May 15, The Hill reports.
Cuomo said additional time is needed to prevent a resurgence of the coronavirus.
“New York Pause has worked," Cuomo said during the news briefing. "We're not there yet. We have to continue doing what we’re doing.”
The decision to keep businesses closed comes despite the governor reporting that the hospitalization rate and rate of intubations to put patients on ventilators are both down.
But, he said, the numbers are not low enough to loosen social distancing policies.
Cuomo gave no indication on what will happen after May 15.
