Ann Coulter: 'The Country Has Not Voted to Turn Itself Into Mexico'

By    |   Thursday, 16 January 2014 06:45 PM EST

Outspoken conservative Ann Coulter says lawmakers' proposals for amnesty, school tuition and drivers' licenses for illegal immigrants must stop because "the country has not voted to turn itself into Mexico."

"How many times do these Republicans have to try pushing amnesty and in-state tuition and drivers' licenses then, suddenly, they discover, oops, the dogs don't like it? They try to back pedal but no one trusts them anymore anyway because it is just such a God-awful idea." Coulter told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"We're a country. We are not a department store. We have to have some control over who comes into this country."

Story continues below video.

Coulter, bestselling author of "Never Trust a Liberal Over Three — Especially a Republican," blames Democrats for getting the ball rolling on the proposed immigration perks.

"I was thinking the other day it really is a dirty trick the Democrats have pulled because the vast majority of illegal immigrants are Hispanics, mostly Mexican, and you have to love them, they're such hard workers, and it's out of no animosity toward them," she said.

"But the country has not voted to turn itself into Mexico. I love Mexicans, I love Mexican food. I don't want this country to be Japan or Sweden either. What's the matter with America as it is?"

Coulter also believes the liberal-leaning network MSNBC is keeping her off its airwaves on purpose — a theory she hopes will change.

"I'm dying to [go on] and I've had people who know people get the word through … I don't think it makes sense for [MSNBC host] Rachel Maddow. We'd have a lovely little interview," Coulter said.

Still, she's not pulling punches on her opinion of the cable network.

"Any casual viewer of MSNBC can see it's a totally closed set, which is why they get crazier and crazier in their conspiracy theories …." she said.

"There's no people at MSNBC to say, 'you people are out of your minds,' because the only conservatives they invite on are, like … Todd Harris, Meghan McCain."

Clarification: In the video, Ann Coulter mentioned that a particular show did not invite conservative guests who could "put two sentences together." Ms. Coulter was referring to MSNBC failing to invite her and other thoughtful conservatives on their shows, and her earlier Twitter exchange with MSNBC host Ed Schultz. Steve Malzberg mentioned Fox & Friends and his own appearance with Schultz some years ago, not Coulter.
