Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey on Tuesday issued an order delaying evictions in the state by renters who cannot pay because they have lost wages over the coronavirus.
"Nobody should be forced out of their home because of COVID-19," Ducey said in a statement. "This order is about protecting public health and providing relief to families impacted by this virus — whether through sickness or economic hardship. This is the right thing to do to support Arizona families during their time of need and prevent the spread of COVID-19."
AZCentral reports that 2,500 renters in the Phoenix area are facing eviction, and that the number is expected to climb as more get sick or lose their jobs as the virus spreads.
The governor's order will remain in effect for 120 days. The Department of Housing and Urban Development announced March 18 that all properties financed by the federal agency were exempt from evictions.
The Arizona order applied not only to those who have lost income, but also to renters who have been quarantined after being diagnosed with coronavirus or have had another member of their household quarantined, those who have been told to self-isolate by a doctor based on symptoms or those at risk of contracting the virus because of an underlying health condition.
