Rep. Ashley Hinson, R-Iowa, said Monday there may be a narrow Republican majority in the House, but she doesn't recommend the alternative of Democrat control of all three branches of the federal government.
"Thank goodness we have now got the Republican trifecta because I don't recommend the Democrat trifecta," Hinson told Newsmax's "Wake Up America." "Look what damage they were able to do to our country."
Hinson said she's not worried about the GOP's slim advantage in the lower chamber because "the American people gave us this mandate."
"We know what our job is and that we have to fulfill on that promise we made to the American people when we were out campaigning," she said. "So, we've already had a narrow majority. It's been narrow ever since I came in. I was elected obviously in 2020, came in in the minority in 2021. … Narrow majorities are nothing new. I think that our process will be, again, not behind closed doors. We're going to be having those discussions and making sure everybody has their perspective represented in the legislation that comes to the floor."
The Iowa Republican also lauded Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., for his focus on "culture in our conference" and engagement with members when drafting legislation.
"These bills are not going to be written behind closed doors," Hinson said. "They've already engaged with members to get our perspective about what needs to be included in these bills. What our red lines are, what are our must-haves.
"That's what I really respect about Mike Johnson and his approach to legislating. So, we were able to notch some of those conservative wins, even in divided government, where we only controlled one-half of one-third through the last Congress. So, I'm excited to see what we're able to really accomplish now that we have all three going forward in this term."
The 119th Congress convened at noon Friday, with Johnson being reelected speaker in a dramatic first floor vote that saw him flip Republican holdouts to retain the gavel on the first ballot.
