Former New York City Police Commissioner Bernie Kerik, whose detective son Joseph was one of the law enforcement officers who helped take down the gunmen behind Tuesday's mass shooting in Jersey City, said the action was a demonstration of what men and women in law enforcement do every day.
"I think Mayor Steven] Fulop from Jersey City said it best," Kerik told Fox News' "Fox and Friends." "They often go underappreciated, quite often, especially these days. But last night, yesterday, was a demonstration of what men and women in law enforcement in this country do on a daily basis. And you have to give them a lot of credit."
Joseph Kerik is a Newark police officer and a member of the city's Emergency Services Unit, which engaged with and killed the two suspects in the New Jersey shooting that left six dead, including Jersey City police detective Joseph Seals.
"Joe was with two detectives, Joseph Solomon and John Hampton from Jersey City PD," the elder Kerik said Wednesday. "They all work in a federal task force. Call for shots fired and a cop down. They responded from Newark, got to Jersey City. Jumped in the back of a BearCat, an armored vehicle."
He said a Jersey City police officer was driving the vehicle and as they got to the building where the shooters were held up, they saw guns and hit the front of the structure with the vehicle.
"When the suspects came up to the door, Joe Solomon opened fire, killing the two guys," said Kerik.
Kerik said his son is "OK," but he hurt his back when the vehicle crashed into the building and his ears were ringing a bit Tuesday night from the gunfire.
Seals was the father of five, and Kerik said there are two organizations, the Jersey City Police Officers Benevolent Association and the Brothers Before Others, who are helping his family.
Kerik is a Newsmax TV contributor.
