The father of a Parkland, Florida, mass shooting victim says Sen. Bernie Sanders', I-Vt., track record on gun violence needs explaining.

"I'm thankful that he's evolved, but he has to answer for it," Fred Guttenberg told CNN in regards to Sanders' votes on two key pieces of gun legislation. "He has to answer for what his thought process was at the time. Your votes and what you've done are still there."

Sanders in the early 1990s sided with the gun lobby and voted against the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act and in 2005 voted to protect gun manufacturers from being sued by victims of gun violence.

Since, Sanders has voted to tighten restrictions on guns.

Guttenberg says he is still suffering from Sanders' 2005 vote.

"Unfortunately, I, as a gun violence victim, am still paying a cost for his decision on PLCAA. That doesn't go away," he said.

Guttenberg earlier this month slammed Sanders for his comment connecting mental health to gun violence, saying it discredits him as a presidential option.

Guttenberg's daughter, Jamie, was 14 when a teenage gunman entered Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in February 2018 with a semiautomatic rifle and killed 17 people.

Guttenberg tweeted Aug. 4:

"Shame on you @SenSanders for these comments. This is a gun issue, to use the gun lobby talking points on this only discredits you as a Presidential option following this weekend."
