Education Secretary Betsy DeVos said in an interview Friday that armed teachers "should be an option for states and communities to consider" following the Florida school shooting last month that killed 17 and injured 14 others.
Not every teacher should have a gun, however, DeVos told Lesley Stahl in an interview to be broadcast Sunday on "60 Minutes" on CBS.
DeVos said she could not imagine her first-grade teacher in Michigan having a weapon.
"But for those who are capable, this is one solution that can and should be considered," she said. "Every state and every community is going to address this issue in a different way."
DeVos said that she would consider innovative ways to address school-safety issues.
"There are a lot of states that are addressing these issues in very cohesive and coherent ways," she told Stahl.
"There is a sense of urgency indeed."
