While appeaing Friday on Spicer & Co., Rep. Dan Bishop, R-NC, told Newsmax TV that he profoundly disagreed with Gov. Roy Cooper’s response to the Coronavirus, noting that the pandemic has become an “unprecedented historic grab for power by governments across the country.”
After North Carolina’s Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper extended the stay-at-home order for the state until May 8, Bishop told hosts Sean Spicer and Lyndsay Keith that “The devastation to our economic lives and other aspects of our lives in very troubling, and the evasiveness, the lack of a clear plan with specific criteria and specific dates, is very troubling.”
He noted that North Carolina is one of the areas least hit by COVID-19 and, “doesn’t have anything in the vicinity of being in jeopardy of outstripping our health care resources.”
To date, North Carolina has had 8,267 confirmed cases of Coronavirus, with 477 hospitalized and 295 deaths, according to WRAL.com.
“Half the work force in the country may already have been idled,” he said. “That cannot be tolerated for long, and we may well look back at this event and say it did not justify this kind of unprecedented historic grab for power by governments across the country, even in the places where the epidemic has had the least evident impact.”
The Raleigh Police Department recently released a tweet stating, “Protesting is a non-essential activity.”
Rep. Bishop, who recently joined an “Open North Carolina”protest, took serious issue with that, stating, “Saying you cannot protest because it is not on the governor’s list of approved activities -- that just doesn’t do. The thinking has to be more careful than that.
“Government, when entering orders, even in an emergency, has to be careful if they are infringing fundamental rights. They have to narrowly tailor their orders so that they do not infringe on those any greater than is necessary.”
