The Broward County Sheriff's Office received about 20 calls over the years related to suspected high school shooter Nikolas Cruz, officials said Friday.

At a news conference, the Washington Examiner reported Sheriff Scott Israel said authorities are now pouring through the calls referencing the 19-year-old, who carried out an attack at his former high school Wednesday, killing 17 people.

"We have uncovered at the Broward Sheriff's Office that we've had approximately 20 calls for service over the last few years regarding the killer," Israel said, the Examiner reported. "Every one of these calls for service will be looked at and scrutinized."

Israel did not detail the nature of the calls, but said some did not involve a police response, and some involved phone contact with people in other states, he said, CBS News reported.

"At the end of day, make no mistake about it, America, the only one to blame for this killing is the killer himself," Israel said.

The update came the same day the FBI admitted it had received a tip Jan. 5 about Cruz, but failed to properly investigate it. The tip was not forwarded to the FBI's Miami field office and no further investigation was conducted, the FBI said.
