President Donald Trump suggested that the 75-year-old Buffalo, New York, man, who was allegedly shoved to the ground by police officers during a protest, is an “ANTIFA provocateur.”
In a Tuesday morning tweet, Trump wrote that “Martin Gugino was pushed away after appearing to scan police communications in order to black out the equipment.”
Trump tweeted at One America News and continued, “I watched, he fell harder than was pushed. Was aiming scanner. Could be a set up?”
Gugino was captured on video walking toward a group of law enforcement officers when two officers allegedly pushed him to the ground. He was hospitalized from the fall.
He was participating in a demonstration protesting the death of George Floyd, a black man who was killed by a white police officer in Minneapolis.
The two officers involved the incident were arrested on charges of second-degree assault. They were released on their own recognizance. They have pleaded not guilty and are scheduled to appear in court next month. They were also suspended from the force.
Gugino’s attorney Kelly Zarcone issued a statement that his client has been a “longtime peaceful protester, human rights advocate, and overall fan of the U.S. Constitution for many years.”
Antifa has been described as an “anti-fascist” movement that aims to cause a disruption in the political system.
