Dozens Injured When Tour Bus Overturns Near Los Angeles

Los Angeles County Fire Department spokesman Captain Brian Jordan said there have been no fatalities from the crash, which occurred on the Foothill Freeway in Irwindale, a community less than 20 miles east of Los Angeles.

Television images from the scene of the crash showed the bus, operated by Da Zhen Bus company, turned on its side on a dirt embankment. Firefighters had set up large tents on the side of the freeway to treat the injured.

At least three helicopters were used to transport a number of people from the scene, and their injuries ranged from minor to major, Jordan said. He had no further details on the extent of those injuries, but said the crash left 51 people hurt.

Some passengers had to be treated at the scene, and those passengers, as well as firefighters, were being given fluids, Jordan said.

"It's hot and we're all standing on the freeway," he said.

At least 18 patients were transferred to various area hospitals, Jordan said.

Local television station KABC reported that four patients with traumatic injuries were taken to Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center and another person with traumatic injuries was taken to Huntington Memorial Hospital in nearby Pasadena.
