Callista Gingrich: Most Schools Teach Revisionist History

By    |   Friday, 07 November 2014 03:28 PM EST

Most schools teach a politically correct revisionist American history, Callista Gingrich said on Newsmax TV on Friday, which is why Gingrich said she developed the “Ellis the Elephant” history book series for young children.

"Unfortunately, today many of our schools are failing to teach our history, including our founding principles and values and instead teach revisionist or politically correct history," Gingrich, the wife of former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, told Ed Berliner on "MidPoint."

"As a result, they are really missing out on the basics of what it means to be American," she explained.

"As we look at some of the statistics, it's really quite sobering — today only 20 percent of fourth graders, 17 percent of eighth graders and 12 percent of twelfth graders are at grade-level proficiency in American history," she said.

"We have some work to do, and we owe it to our kids to give them the tools they need at a very early age so they begin to appreciate the greatness of this nation," she added.

Gingrich released "From Sea to Shining Sea" in mid-October. It is the fourth book in the Ellis the Elephant American history series she has written for children from ages four to eight.

Her husband has co-authored a series of historical fiction books on American history for adults.

She said that she wrote the series to comply with the Common Core standards.

"Whether or not you agree with Common Core, it's a fact as it's implemented in most of our states," she explained.

"As for children's books, Common Core is most concerned with the use of proper grammar and syntax as well as age appropriate vocabulary, which most of us can agree is a pretty good idea," she said.

"Ellis the Elephant and I are going to continue to keep our facts historically accurate, use good grammar and make history easy and accessible for kids," she added.

According to Gingrich, "some on the left continue to want to degrade our history."

"We need to give our kids the tools they need so they do know what it means to be an American, have a sense of patriotism to know what it means to live in this country and to appreciate this great nation," she added.
