Two Capitol Police officers have been suspended and accused of misconduct during last week's breach of the building by protesters, according to a Democrat who oversees the House subcommittee that approves funding for the service.
Rep. Tim Ryan, D-Ohio, also told reporters on a video conference call a police officer had been arrested, but a spokesman later in the day corrected the congressman saying an officer had not been arrested.
"There are currently 10-15 U.S. Capitol police officers being investigated in conjunction with activities on Jan. 6," the spokesman said. "Two officers have been suspended – no officers have been arrested."
Without identifying anyone by name, Ryan said one of the officers suspended took a selfie with the protesters while the other donned a "MAGA" hat – or Make America Great Again, the slogan of President Donald Trump's campaign.
A group of protesters infiltrated the halls of Congress as it was conducting a certification of the Electoral College vote, resulting in the congressmen and women to be evacuated from the floor.
Ryan reportedly said there has been no evidence of any pre-arranged cooperation between the protesters and the Capitol Police, but officials from the congressional force are investigating if anyone was involved "at a big level or small level in any way."
"We need all hands on deck moving forward and can't have somebody protecting on the inauguration that was not doing the job during the Jan. 6 event," Ryan said.
