President Donald Trump's response to the violence in Charlottesville, Virginia split voters, mostly along party lines, a new CBS News poll shows.
When asked if Trump's description of who is to blame is accurate:
- 35 percent agreed
- 55 percent disagreed
- 68 percent of Republicans agreed
- 21 percent disagreed
- 10 percent of Democrats agreed
- 83 percent disagreed
- 34 percent of independents agreed
- 53 percent disagreed
The majority of people disapproved of Trump's response to the attack, which voters were asked if they would call "domestic terrorism.”
- 63 percent called the attack "domestic terrorism"
- 27 percent disagreed
- 51 percent of Republicans agreed
- 38 percent disagreed
- 73 percent of Democrats agreed
- 20 percent disagreed
- 63 percent of independents agreed
- 27 percent disagreed
The vast majority of Democrats think Trump's policies have encouraged racial division, while most Republicans think his policies haven't had much affect on racial division or unity.
CBS News conducted the survey by phone from August 14-16, sampling 1,223 adults, with a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
