There is no such thing as racial progress or race relations in America, said black comedian Chris Rock.

Rock made the comments while reflecting on the media's reaction to the Michael Brown shooting in Ferguson as part of a wide-ranging interview with New York Magazine op-ed columnist and former New York Times journalist Frank Rich.

"Here's the thing. When we talk about race relations in America or racial progress, it's all nonsense," he said.

"There are no race relations. White people were crazy. Now they're not as crazy. To say that black people have made progress would be to say they deserve what happened to them before."

Rock also said President Barack Obama's election should not be considered progress either.

"There's been black people qualified to be president for hundreds of years … There have been smart, educated, beautiful, polite black children for hundreds of years.

"The advantage that my children have is that my children are encountering the nicest white people that America has ever produced. Let's hope America keeps producing nicer white people," he said.

When asked about the Republican midterm victories, Rock said the party was successful because it has "no problem playing victims."

"Even in victory. America — not black America, but America as a whole — started in England and was ruled by kings and queens and had a class system. I'm almost of the mind that that's what America wants at the end of the day. Maybe America wants monopolies."

The interview came out in advance of Rock's new film, "Top Five," which he directed and stars in alongside Rosario Dawson.

Rock was recently under fire for making a joke on "Saturday Night Live" that the new Freedom Tower should be referred to as the "Never Going In There Tower."

Fox News legal analyst Peter Johnson Jr. described the comments as a "disservice to comedy."
