Bill Clinton to Speak at Miami Rally for Charlie Crist

By    |   Saturday, 30 August 2014 07:48 PM EDT

Former President Bill Clinton will be the keynote speaker at a rally in Miami Friday for Democrat gubernatorial candidate Charlie Crist in his heated battle to unseat Republican Gov. Rick Scott.

"President Clinton's been fighting on the front lines for years on the issues we care about," the Crist campaign said Saturday on its website. "Equal pay for women, raising the minimum wage, expanding healthcare to everyone who needs it, and making sure that everyone has a fair shot at success.

"He's better than anyone at explaining why what we're doing matters," the campaign said.

Clinton will speak at the J.W. Marriott Marquis Hotel, with doors opening at 5 p.m.

"No large bags on signs will be permitted inside the event," says an email sent to those who register on the site to attend the rally.

Crist, who was a Republican when he served one term as governor before making a failed bid for U.S. Senate in 2010, won the Democratic gubernatorial nomination on Tuesday. Scott was elected in 2010 as Crist's successor.

Most recent polls show the incumbent ahead of Crist by 1 percentage point.

Crist began his campaign for U.S. Senate as a Republican, but switched to independent when tea party-backed Republican Marco Rubio led him in the polls. He lost to Rubio in a three-way general election.

Crist became a Democrat in 2012.

Clinton has been stumping for Democrats in several tight races in recent weeks, including Kentucky Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes in her campaign against Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.
