The United States on Monday hit 100 new deaths from the novel coronavirus per day for the first time, and also hit 500 total deaths, The Washington Post reported.

Deaths have been reported in at least 34 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, according to tracking by the Post. More than 41,000 people in the country have been infected in every state.

Multiple states and communities have gone on lockdowns, shutting down schools and non-essential businesses, but President Donald Trump has said his administration has no plans for a nationwide shutdown to contain the spread of the virus. The White House has, however, urged people to engage in "social distancing" and avoid all unnecessary contact.

With the economy thrown into turmoil over the drastic measures taken so far, Trump has indicated he might reevaluate after the initial 15 order, saying on Twitter that the "cure" should not "be worse than the problem itself."
