Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on Tuesday chastised spring breakers who have either continued congregating on the state's beaches or moved their activities onto college campuses even though they have been told to practice "social distancing" to fight coronavirus.

"A lot of students have just been congregating at the universities and going out and doing things there, and that’s not something we want,” DeSantis said during a Tuesday news conference.

Bloomberg News reported Texas beaches also were crowded for spring break by college students who said they were unconcerned by virus warnings.

Though young healthy people are less likely to have serious complications from the virus that has become a pandemic, they still can unknowingly transmit it to others who could need hospitalization or even die.

DeSantis announced that gatherings at beaches would be limited to groups of 10 while keeping at least six feet away from other groups.

For the next 30 days bars and nightclubs throughout the state will close at 5 p.m. He urged residents to use take-out and delivery from restaurants, but if they do eat in, customers must be separated by six feet.
