A six-week-old newborn in Connecticut died last week after testing positive for the coronavirus, and may be the youngest person to die from the virus, Gov. Ned Lamont announced this week.
"It is with heartbreaking sadness today that we can confirm the first pediatric fatality in Connecticut linked to #COVID19. A 6-week-old newborn from the Hartford area was brought unresponsive to a hospital late last week and could not be revived," Lamont tweeted on Wednesday.
“Testing confirmed last night that the newborn was COVID-19 positive,” he added. “This is absolutely heartbreaking. We believe this is one of the youngest lives lost anywhere due to complications relating to COVID-19.”
Hartford Mayor Luke Bronin confirmed to NBC Connecticut that the newborn was from the city.
"Our heart breaks for that family," he said.
"We have also seen that this disease can be tragically unpredictable and fatal to people of any age," Bronin said.
The governor recently signed an executive order requiring stores that remain open during the coronavirus outbreak abide by the new social distancing guidelines known as “Safe Store Rules,” starting this Friday. So far, the state has confirmed 3,557 cases of the coronavirus, with 85 deaths attributed to the virus, according to Johns Hopkins University’s Coronavirus Resource Center.
