Deaths from the coronavirus outside of China have surpassed those inside for the first time since the outbreak began, as the epicenter of the pandemic starts to shift to Europe and the United States, The Wall Street Journal reports.
About 3,200 people have died in China as a result of the virus, according to Johns Hopkins University, while over 3,300 people outside China, including people in Italy, Iran and Spain, have died from the disease. The number of cases of coronavirus infection outside of China, 88,000, has also surpassed the number of cases identified inside China, 81,000.
The total number of infected worldwide has surpassed 169,000 in 148 different countries and territories, with over 6,500 deaths caused by the virus.
Mainland China still has the highest number of deaths of any single country with 3,189, according to the Journal, followed by Italy with 1,441, Iran with 611, and Spain with 195. CNN International reports that Italy has seen more than 24,000 coronavirus infections in total, and had 368 deaths in just 24 hours last weekend.
