An overwhelming majority of Americans do not want K-12 schools to reopen fully in the fall without coronavirus mitigation measures in place, according to a new poll.

An Associated Press and NORC Center of Public Affairs survey released Wednesday shows that just 8% of Americans think schools should fully reopen with classes in the fall as they typically would.

Poll results show:

  • 14% of Americans say they think schools can reopen with minor adjustments.
  • 46% of Americans say major adjustments are needed in order for schools to reopen.
  • 31% of Americans say instruction should not be in the classroom this fall.
  • 60% of Americans say a mix of virtual and in-person classes should be the plan for schools.
  • 80% of Americans say they are concerned about the reopening of schools.
  • 55% of American parents say they are worried about their child falling behind academically.

In order to reopen schools, 81% say daily disinfecting of schools is essential, 69% say students and teachers must wear masks, 66% say daily temperature checks are essential and 63% say keeping students social distanced in the classroom is essential.

The AP-NORC poll surveyed 1,057 adults between July 16-20. The margin of sampling error is plus or minus 4.3 percentage points.
