President Donald Trump said in a new interview that his administration is winning the coronavirus pandemic battle but "got outplayed" in the "public relations" aspect of it.
Trump spoke with journalist Greta Van Susteren for Gray TV's "Full Court Press: Election Countdown" and said the pandemic numbers could have been worse than they are.
"I think we did a great job with coronavirus, except at public relations," Trump said, according to The Hill. "Look, we would have lost 2 and a half million people, as I've said. We're at 185,000, and it's too much. One person is too much.
"[I]t never should have been allowed to happen by China. They should have never allowed it out. They stopped it from going into China, but they didn't stop it from going into us. We did a great job except public relations-wise, my people got outplayed. Just like you said before, [House Speaker] Nancy Pelosi said this or that, no matter what you do, if you say, 'We did this,' they say, 'Well, it wasn't good enough.' If you say, 'We did that ...' This is standard fare for the Democrats. They say it wasn't good enough."
Van Susteren spoke with Trump outside the Oval Office on Wednesday, according to tweets she posted. As of Thursday morning, more than 201,000 Americans have died due to COVID-19, according to WorldoMeter.
Trump's remarks came about a week after audio recordings of interviews Trump did with journalist Bob Woodward were released, in which Trump said he downplayed the threat COVID-19 posed on the U.S.
