The Dallas Cowboys have become the world's most valuable sports franchise — worth an estimated $4 billion, Forbes says.

In its annual rankings of sports teams released this week, Forbes has placed the Cowboys ahead of Real Madrid and Barcelona following a whopping increase of 25 percent in value.

And the Cowboys, owned by Jerry Jones, also remain the NFL's most valuable team for the ninth straight year thanks to record league revenue of $620 million. That's an incredible $125 million more than any other football team.

"The Cowboys generate $90 million annually from AT&T Stadium's 350 luxury suites and more than $100 million from sponsors. The club won a playoff game last season for only the second time in 18 years with a thrilling come-from-behind win against the Detroit Lions," Forbes senior editor Kurt Badenhausen said.

"AT&T Stadium is still the center for big sporting events with the venue serving as the host of the first college football national championship game in January between Ohio State and Oregon."

Real Madrid had held the title of world's most valuable team for the past three years.

"Blockbuster TV contracts are fueling unprecedented increases in sports team values around the globe as the average value of a top 50 franchise has doubled over the past four years," Badenhausen said.

"The NFL is still king on TV with contracts worth nearly $7 billion annually from its media partners."

It plunged to second place this year to $3.65 billion, followed by Barcelona at $3.55 billion. In fourth place is the New York Yankees at $3.4 billion.

They are followed by Manchester United at $3.32 billion; the New England Patriots, $3.2 billion; New York Knicks; $3 billion, Washington Redskins, $2.8 billion; New York Giants, $2.8 billion. The Los Angeles Lakers and San Francisco 49ers tied with $2.7 billion.
