Hundreds of demonstrators in Washington protesting the death of a man in police custody in Minneapolis appear to have relocated to outside the Trump International Hotel after law enforcement widened its security perimeter around the White House, Newsweek reported.
Video shared on social media by Washington Post reporter Hannah Natanson showed Pennsylvania Avenue with people sitting essentially shoulder to shoulder on the street from the metal barricades in front of the hotel to the far curb.
Similar gatherings of protesters have occurred at Trump Tower in New York City have occurred over the past week, with thousands chanting at local police, the New York Post reported.
Demonstrations near the White House turned violent last weekend, with St. John’s Episcopal Church, located across Lafayette Square from the executive mansion, burned by rioters.
The National Park Police cleared the park on Monday, which also became violent when demonstrators objected to being moved.
And 8-foot chain link fence was installed around Lafayette Square after the incident, after waist-high barricades proved ineffective, Fox News reported.
CNN said tall metal fencing was being erected all around the White House complex, which extends from 15th Street to 17th Street, both of which intersects with Constitution Avenue. The Trump Hotel is located about four blocks from the 15th Street edge.
The Secret Service did not address the purpose of the fencing or how long it was expected to stand.
"The US Secret Service does not comment on our protective means and methods for operational security reasons," a spokesperson told CNN.
