New York City Public Advocate Bill de Blasio leads the Democratic field in the city's mayoral race, upstaging longtime front-runner City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, according to a new Quinnipiac University poll released Wednesday.

The survey of 579 likely voters conducted Aug. 7-12 showed de Blasio receiving support from 30 percent of those responding. For weeks, he had been trailing Quinn, who got 24 percent in the latest survey.

In addition, former Comptroller William Thompson received 22 percent; embattled former U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner garnered 10 percent; Comptroller John Liu won 6 percent; and 1 percent of those polled supported former Councilman Sal Albanese.

Seven percent of the likely Democratic voters said they were undecided, according to the poll.

The Democratic primary is Tuesday, Sept. 10.

"A few weeks ago, Public Advocate Bill de Blasio looked like an also-ran," said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. "Today, he's the leader of the pack and a winner in the runoffs.

As for Weiner, Carroll said: "Nobody thinks Weiner will pack it in, but 52 percent of likely Democratic primary voters wish he'd go away and 51 percent say they'd never vote for him."
