One person was killed Sunday when a private plane crashed at the airport in Aspen, Colo., The New York Times reports.

The plane crashed around 12:45 p.m. near the runway at the Aspen-Pitkin County Airport, Alex Burchetta, director of operations at the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office, told the Times.

The three people who were on board have not been identified, Mr. Burchetta said. Of the survivors, one suffered serious injuries, and the other had more minor ones, he said.

Comedian Kevin Nealon described seeing the crash on his Twitter account.

"Horrible plane crash here at Aspen airport," he wrote in one of several messages sent from the scene. "Exploded into flames as it was landing. I think it was a private jet."

Country singer LeAnn Rimes also took to Twitter to describe seeing what she described as the "horrible" crash. "So sad!" she wrote.

Aspen, nestled in the Rocky Mountains, is a resort destination about 100 miles southwest of Denver.

The Associated Press and Reuters contributed to this report.
