LA Mayor Urges Clippers Owner to Apologize for Racist Remarks

Monday, 05 May 2014 01:01 PM EDT

Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling has been asked to apologize by the city's mayor for the racist remarks he made about African Americans.

"I spoke with him a few days ago," Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti told Bob Schieffer on CBS’ "Face the Nation" on Sunday.

I "urged him to apologize to my city and our city, which he says he loves, and to move towards transitioning the team and restoring the luster of a team that has 'Los Angeles' on its jersey."

Story continues below video.

Sterling has been banned for life from associating with the Clippers organization or the National Basketball Association.

The NBA also fined him $2.5 million for saying, among other things, that his girlfriend should not bring black guests to Clippers games.

A move is also underway to force Sterling to sell the team. Oprah Winfrey has said she is interested in buying the franchise.

But Garcetti said he doesn't believe Sterling thinks the NBA will necessarily make good on its punishment.

"I think that he thinks that he’s going to be the owner for a long time. That he wants to stay the owner," he said.
