Self-driving cars will be used in a Florida retirement community, which could lead to using the autonomous vehicles to help seniors around the U.S.
Voyage, a startup focused on self-driving vehicles, is testing the vehicles as a taxi service for the 125,000 seniors in The Villages, Florida, the company reported.
The cars will pick up seniors and taxi them free of charge around the 750 miles of roads in The Villages community, the company reported.
"There’s been tons of interest by seniors, and no complaints,” Voyage CEO Oliver Cameron said in a CBS News report.
Eighty percent of residents of The Villages have smartphones and can access the service through an app, Cameron said in the CBS report.
“They feel like pioneers,” he added.
Cameron acknowledges that the program is just beginning.
“We have a long way to go before this is viable for everyone in the country. But if we succeed here, it will be much easier to win universal acceptance,” Cameron said in the CBS News report.
A technician will be in the car to monitor the system at first; eventually the technician will no longer be included and a fee for the taxi will be added, CBS reported.
The cars were launched successfully in a previous experiment at The Villages in San Jose, California, The New York Times reported.
