Authorities discovered bomb materials during their investigation into several men they say were planning to kidnap Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.
The Detroit Free Press reported that the discovery could lead to additional charges.
"Firearms and explosive device components were recently recovered, and must be analyzed to determine whether charges under the National Firearms Act, explosives, or anti-terrorism statutes are warranted," Assistant U.S. Attorney Nils Kessler said.
"The FBI has collected hundreds of hours of audio recordings from confidential human sources and undercover agents, and is still in the process of collating that material."
He added, "Because of the imminent nature of the threat, law enforcement was obliged to arrest the subjects before this evidence could be processed."
Six men were arrested earlier this month and charged in the kidnapping plot, which was designed to occur before the Nov. 3 election. An additional eight men have been slapped with lower charges as part of the plot.
Among the allegations was that the group of men, who belong to a militia, were going to spent $4,000 on explosives to blow up a bridge to delay law enforcement's response to the kidnapping, the Free Press noted.
