Various gun control groups are staying clear of the Obama administration's proposal to outlaw certain ammunition used in AR-15 rifles, an idea that was dropped on Tuesday.
The
Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) announced Tuesday it would not pursue a ban on the M855 "green tip" rounds popular with AR-15 owners. The
National Rifle Association applauded the decision and called the proposal "100 percent political."
"Today's announcement proves what we have said all along — this was 100 percent political," NRA Executive Vice President Wayne La Pierre said in a release. "President [Barack] Obama failed to pass gun control through Congress, so he tried to impose his political agenda through executive fiat. But every gun owner in America needs to understand Barack Obama's hatred of the Second Amendment has not changed."
Now, gun control groups are staying silent in the wake of the ATF's move to put the proposal on the shelf.
According to
The Hill, La Pierre accused the administration of "pandering to billionaire Michael Bloomberg and his gun control groups."
But Bloomberg's group, Everytown for Gun Safety, denies playing any role in the proposal.
"We have sent dozens of recommendations to the administration on what they can do to prevent gun violence — this ammo proposal has never been one of them," Everytown for Gun Safety spokesperson Erika Soto Lamb told The Hill.
The same goes for the gun control group linked to former Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, who survived an assassination attempt in 2011.
"We are focused on keeping guns out of the hands of dangerous people and protecting the rights of responsible, law-abiding gun owners, not banning bullets or other forms of hardware," Americans for Responsible Solutions spokesman Mark Prentice told The Hill.
