US Nurse Pham in 'Fair Condition' at Maryland Hospital

Friday, 17 October 2014 11:01 AM EDT

A Texas nurse who was infected with Ebola is in fair condition at a specialized Maryland hospital, officials said Friday.

Nina Pham was flown from Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital late Thursday to the National Institutes of Health Clinical Center in Bethesda, Maryland and arrived just before midnight.

"She is not deteriorating," Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute for Allergy and Infectious Diseases, told reporters.

"She is quite stable now, and she is resting comfortably," Fauci said, declining to say why she had moved from good to fair condition due to patient privacy laws.

Fauci said she was receiving "the best possible care," and noted that there is no drug on the market to treat the Ebola virus.

"She is very fatigued," said Fauci. "This virus knocks you out."

Pham, 26, was the first health care worker infected with Ebola in the United States. Her diagnosis was announced October 12.

She became ill after caring for a Liberian man with Ebola who was diagnosed in Texas late last month. The man, Thomas Eric Duncan, died on October 8.

A second nurse at the same Texas hospital has also tested positive for Ebola and is being treated at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia.
