Iowa State University on Monday said it will allow up to 25,000 fans in its stadium to watch the first home game of the college football season, but will not permit attendance for a second game if fans don't follow social distancing precautions.
The Cyclones are scheduled to face the University of Louisiana at Lafayette on September 12.
Fans will need to wear face coverings once they get out of their vehicles, and no tailgating will be allowed in the parking lot.
“Our staff has strategically reassigned all seat locations using current Cyclone Club giving levels, priority points within those levels and taking into account location and/or price, to create improved social distancing,” Iowa State Director of Athletics Jamie Pollard wrote in a letter to fans. The seating chart for the game shows gaps to maintain social distancing.
If the coronavirus numbers increase over the next few weeks, the plan to allow 25,000 may change.
“In order for our plans to succeed, we need full buy-in from everyone,” Pollard said of the precautions.
“If our mitigation actions are successful, we will allow all season ticket purchasers to attend the Oklahoma game Oct. 3. However, if we determine that mitigation measures were not followed adequately at the first game, we will have no fans at future games,” Pollard said.
The New York Times reported that Iowa is one of 10 states with rising cases of new coronavirus infections.
Iowa has close to 65,000 coronavirus cases, including at least 1,116 deaths.
