The website and Twitter account of WBOC Television, a Salisbury, Maryland-based station, were attacked Tuesday by a hacker claiming to be a sympathizer of the Islamic State jihadist group (ISIS), according to
The Daily Times, a local newspaper.
The account, named "CyberCaliphate," posted tweets and pictures claiming to have obtained classified information from federal terrorism investigations through the station's Twitter account.
One tweet from the commandeered account read "INFIDELS, NEW YEAR WILL MAKE YOU SUFFER." The account's profile picture was replaced by text reading, "CyberCaliphate ... I love you isis",
The Baltimore Sun reported.
The jihadist language was accompanied by an image of a masked man.
One of the posts linked to by the hijacked WBOC account promised that the sabotage would continue.
"In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful, the CyberCaliphate continues its CyberJihad," it said. "From this day on you will look around more often, will call up your children more often, think of your security more often but that won't help you."
The Albuquerque Journal was the target of a cyberattack before Christmas, and its Facebook page and Twitter feed were attacked again on Tuesday, according to officials with the newspaper.
Twitter itself has been threatened by suspected ISIS sympathizers for working to prevent terrorist groups from using social media to foment violence.
In September, an ISIS-related Twitter account was suspended after asking "lone wolves" in the United States and Europe to assassinate employees of the social media platform.
Vocativ translated a series of tweets posted by the account @Dawlamoon which threatened Twitter.
The account, which had 3,000 followers, tweeted that "The Time has arrived to respond to Twtter's management by directly attacking their employees and physically assassinating them!! Those who will carry out this attack are the sleeper cells of death."
Dawlamoon's bio page was allegedly run by Al Nusra Al Maqdisia, which means "The supporters of Jerusalem." Vocativ said the group had "pledged loyalty to ISIS" in February and claimed to have fought in Gaza on the terror group's behalf.
Vocativ said it had not been able to confirm the information, but that the group and its accounts are
frequently referenced in online ISIS forums.
