Former U.S. Attorney General Michael Bernard Mukasey says prison may be in the future for the Internal Revenue Service workers who targeted the Tea Party and other groups.
"It's not out of the realm of possibility,'' Mukasey told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.
Story continues below.
His remarks came hours after CNN reported that the IRS had identified two "rogue" employees in its Cincinnati office as being principally responsible for "overly aggressive" handling of requests by conservative groups for tax-exempt status.
Mukasey, now a partner at the international law firm Debevoise & Plimpton, said there are a number of steps in the ongoing investigation that must be taken before punishments are considered.
"[That includes] the finding that somebody set out specifically to target groups based on political considerations, based on standards, and did so purposely . . . and did so outside the rules and did it with the proper level of intent,'' he said.
"There's a lot of steps between an inspector general's report and the jail house. It's not out of the realm of possibility.''
