Actor James Woods is suing a Twitter user who accused him in a tweet of being a cocaine addict, according to
The Hollywood Reporter.
The Reporter says the Twitter user has replied to Woods' tweets about President Barack Obama, Caitlyn Jenner and Planned Parenthood. The actor regularly tweets conservative political statements, and his lawsuit alleges that the user colluded with nine other users to defame him.
They also are named in
the lawsuit.
According to the suit, Twitter user Abe List, using the Twitter handle @abelisted, has attacked Woods as far back as December with phrases such as "joke," "ridiculous," "scum" and "clown-boy."
While those phrases aren't actionable, Woods maintains that calling him a cocaine addict is, since it could hurt his reputation and ability to get work.
The dispute began July 15 when Woods posted a Tweet about media coverage:
The user, who since has deleted his or her account, replied:
"@RealJamesWoods @benshapiro cocaine addict James Woods still sniffing and spouting."
Abe List stepped over the line with that comment, according to the lawsuit, saying that Woods "is not now, nor has ever been, a cocaine addict, and AL had no reason to believe otherwise, Rather AL's outrageous claim is the culmination of a malicious on-line campaign by AL to discredit and damage Woods' reputation, a campaign which began as early as December 2014."
Since Woods is a public figure, he would have to prove actual malice to win.
The Reporter said that Abe List's profile, before it was deleted, indicated that he or she lives in the Los Angeles area, attended Harvard University, was a partner at an equity firm and is married to a lawyer.
