Jemele Hill, a staff writer at The Atlantic and former ESPN host who left the network following a slew of controversial comments she made about President Donald Trump, referenced a phrase about assassination during the president’s State of the Union address, according to several news outlets.

Hill, who in 2017 called Trump a "white supremacist," on Tuesday in response to a tweet from Showtime's Deses Nice that said he wanted Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., to interrupt Trump’s speech and yell, "Whose mans is this?" said: "Nah, she gotta yell: GETCHO HAND OUT OF MY POCKET."

The statement "is a reference to what one of Malcolm X's assassins yelled out before they killed the 1960s civil rights leader," said NewsBusters' deputy research director Geoffrey Dickens.

Hill took the tweet down and apologized.

"Let me be clear: I have often disagreed with many of the president's policies, his behavior and rhetoric, but I would never call for violence against him, or any person," she said Wednesday night. "I apologize for breathing life into such an absurd assumption.

"And that's why I took it down. I don't need to dig in on this unnecessarily. If there's a chance someone could arrive at that conclusion, I'd rather just say I'm sorry and move on."
