The mainstream media's love affair with President Joe Biden is working early as 69% now approve of the job he has done on the coronavirus in his first week, according to the ABC News/Ipsos poll released Sunday.

"Biden's early honeymoon period is a sharp departure from the underwhelming initial response former President Donald Trump received four years ago," ABC News wrote. "In a recent ABC News/Washington Post poll, Biden's score for handling the transition landed at 67%, nearly 30 points higher than his predecessor just before his inauguration.

"Trump's lackluster marks broke with the pattern for newly elected presidents, who usually enjoy high approval ratings in their first months in office."

Among the 69% approving of Biden's early executive orders to respond to the coronavirus pandemic, per the poll:

  • 97% Democrats.
  • 70% independents.
  • 40% Republicans.

Biden even received high marks (57% confidence) for his call for unity as his Democrat colleagues in the House – along with 10 anti-Trump Republicans – impeached his predecessor.

The poll showed a video of Biden's inauguration address, saying:

"We can see each other not as adversaries, but as neighbors. We can treat each other with dignity and respect. We can join forces, stop the shouting, and lower the temperature. For without unity, there is no peace – only bitterness and fury. No progress – only exhausting outrage. No nation – only a state of chaos. This is our historic moment of crisis and challenge. And unity is the path forward. And we must meet this moment as the United States of America."

The poll showed 71% saw it as convincing, while 24% were deeply skeptical and 22% were very confident in Biden's ability to unify a divided country.

The Ipsos poll was conducted Jan. 22-23 among 504 American adults with a margin of error of plus or minus 5 percentage points.
