Joe Arpaio said he would not ask his friend, President Donald Trump, for a pardon in his conviction for criminal contempt, the former Arizona sheriff told The Arizona Republic.

"The reason I think a lot of this is being talked about is that many, many people around the country are saying, 'Trump should pardon,'" Arpaio told the Republic on Wednesday. "I have not called him on this issue. I'm sure I could. ... I'm with him, pardon no pardon, and not asking him."

Arpaio was found guilty last week in federal court for his "flagrant disregard" of a federal judge's orders prohibiting him from rounding up illegal immigrants who have not committed any crimes.

Arpaio, 85, faces six months in confinement.

The former Maricopa County sheriff was an early supporter of Trump's and the two found common ground on illegal immigration.

"Whatever the president wants me to do, I would support him," Arpaio told the Republic.
