Biden Campaign Seizes on Trump's Bow on Impacting Abortion Law

By    |   Thursday, 11 January 2024 11:24 AM EST

President Joe Biden's campaign wasted little time in calling out former President Donald Trump's comments regarding the Supreme Court's overturning of Roe v. Wade in June of 2022.

"For 54 years they were trying to get Roe v. Wade terminated, and I did it, and I'm proud to have done it," Trump told a televised town hall Wednesday night to a standing ovation.

Shortly thereafter, President Biden reposted the campaign's post with the remark, "Just like he said: he did it."

Democrats are quick to seize on any Trump statements involving abortion access as they see it as a winning issue for younger and swing voters. The Biden campaign credits the Roe V. Wade decision for their down-ballot success in the off-year elections and in the Republican's inability to gain a substantial majority in 2022.

The abortion issue is credited with helping Democrats in the 2023 elections with the party gaining control of both houses of the Virginia state legislature and securing a second term for Kentucky Democrat Gov. Andy Beshear. In November, Ohio voters passed legislation securing abortion rights in the state despite Trump having carried Ohio only three years prior.

Trump has managed to walk the tightrope of precise language with the hot-button issue of abortion reminding voters in the fall that going too far in restrictions will alienate some voters, and the issue is best left as it is: a state's right.

Speaking with NBC's "Meet the Press" in September, Trump tried to carve out a middle ground, labeling Democrats extremists, while he was looking to "come together with all groups and have something that is acceptable."

Yet on Wednesday, Trump remained proud as the President who oversaw Roe v. Wade's downfall. "And we did it.  And we did something that was a miracle."
