Joseph Kerik, a Newark police officer and the son of former New York City police commissioner Bernie Kerik, engaged with and killed one of the suspects in the New Jersey shooting that left six dead, including one police officer.
Joseph Kerik is a member of the city's specially trained Emergency Services Unit.
The shooting happened around a convenience store Tuesday afternoon. Three people inside the store were killed, along with two suspected shooters.
The firefight involved dozens of law enforcement officers and lasted over an hour along a major thoroughfare. SWAT teams, state police, and federal agents responded to the scene, and police blocked off the area, which, in addition to Sacred Heart School, has some stores, a kosher supermarket, and a hairstylist.
The shooting started around 12:30 p.m. ET. Two separate incidents were involved in the shootout – one that took place at Bay View Cemetery and the second at the kosher market near the intersection of Bayview Ave. and Martin Luther King Drive.
