Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., 55, was revealed Tuesday as presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden's running mate after weeks of intense speculation.

Biden had vowed before even winning the nomination to name a woman as his running mate if he made it to the top spot. But as a summer of protests raged, sparked by the death of George Floyd, a Black man, at the hands of a white police officer in Minneapolis on Memorial Day, calls became stronger for that choice to be a "woman of color" and preferably a Black woman. Harris is the daughter of a Jamaican father and an Indian mother.

The New York Times profile in July 2019 noted Harris' approach to issues is more "literal" than ideological.

"Policy has to be relevant," Harris told the Times. "That's my guiding principle: Is it relevant? Not, 'Is it a beautiful sonnet?'"

"I'm not trying to restructure society," Harris said. "I'm just trying to take care of the issues that wake people up in the middle of the night.

According to the PBS NewsHour, Harris supports the Paris climate accord, free college tuition for most Americans, bans on so-called assault-style weapons and high-capacity magazines, universal, government-run healthcare, a re-examination of ICE, and ending of the border wall.
