White House counselor Kellyanne Conway's husband — a constant critic of President Donald Trump — on Monday trashed Rudy Giuliani for "making sh**t up" amid a changing narrative on Trump's contact with Michael Cohen before his congressional testimony.
In remarks to the New York Daily News, Giuliani walked back a CNN interview Sunday in which he said he did not know if Trump talked with Cohen before his 2017 Capitol Hill testimony, but added: "So, what if he talked to him about it?"
"The president never spoke with Cohen about the congressional testimony," Giuliani told Daily News, asserting he had confirmed that with previous members of Trump's legal team.
Also Monday, Giuliani issued a statement to clarify his remarks, maintaining they were "hypothetical."
"My recent statements about discussions during the 2016 campaign between Michael Cohen and then-candidate Donald Trump about a potential Trump Moscow 'project' were hypothetical and not based on conversations I had with the president," Giuliani said in a statement shared by reporters on social media, including NBC News' Geoff Bennett.
"My comments did not represent the actual timing or circumstances of any such discussions. The point is that the proposal was in the earliest stage and did not advance beyond a free non-binding letter of intent."
Lawyer George Conway was not having any of it, tweeting: "Translation: 'I just made s**t up.'"
Conway had already called Giuliani's Sunday comments "perfectly insane."
The White House counselor's hubby has been reliably riled by Trump. But the president, who in November sarcastically referred to Conway as "Mr. Kellyanne Conway," sniped it is all a way to get "publicity for himself."
