A regional arts organization in Portland has cancelled an outdoor screening of the 1990 Arnold Schwarzenegger comedy film “Kindergarten Cop” after it came under fire on Twitter as an example of “cops traumatizing kids” and “overpolicing,” Fox News reported.
The Northwest Film Center had chosen “Kindergarten Cop” — a film in which Schwarzenegger portrays a police officer who goes undercover as a kindergarten teacher to find a boy and his mother who could provide evidence against a drug dealer — because it was filmed in Astoria, Oregon.
But it was yanked after Portland author Lois Leveen, who Fox News described as “left-leaning,” posted a series of tweets that compared the film to “Gone With the Wind.”
The NW Film Center denied that their cancellation of “Kindergarten Cop” was related to Leveen’s tweets but replied directly to her in announcing the withdrawal of the film.
“After discussion with staff and community members, however, we agreed that at this moment in history, John Lewis: Good Trouble is the right film to open this year’s Drive-In series,” the NW Film Center posted.
