Los Angeles police officers working around the clock to quell ongoing protests will not be paid for working overtime, Breitbart News reports.
According to an internal letter obtained by Breitbart, the department’s overtime has cost more than $40 million.
Police officers have been responding to demonstrations that have sometimes turned violent in the days since the death of George Floyd, a black man, who was killed by a white police officer in Minneapolis.
Police Chief Michael Moore states that the overtime costs “far exceeds any budgetary reserve to address unusual occurrences.”
In the letter, Moore described the past several days as “extraordinary” but didn’t specifically name the Floyd protests that have been taking place.
The letter stated that starting retroactively as of June 7, overtime will be paid “in the form of time at the appropriate rate.”
Two sources familiar with the slashing of overtime pay told Breitbart News that instead of being paid for overtime in cash, officers can use the difference as future time off or take payment upon retirement.
“Guys and gals are beyond pissed … many are actively looking to quit and go to another department. Some in, and some out of state,” an LAPD officer told Breitbart News.
On top of the recent overtime expenses, the department is also getting rid of all nonessential overtime, with the exception of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, Breitbart reports.
Mayor Eric Garcetti has already announced plans to cut the police department’s budget by as much as $150 million, the Los Angeles Times reports.
