Sen. Graham Proposes Internet Gambling Ban

By    |   Thursday, 27 March 2014 01:46 PM EDT

Sen. Lindsey Graham and other lawmakers have proposed legislation to restore a federal ban on Internet gambling.

Graham, a Republican from South Carolina, says the Justice Department was in error when it approved online wagering in a 2011, the Greenville News reported.

"The attorney general’s office, in my view, made a huge legal misstep here," Graham said.

The newspaper reported that Graham’s bill has bipartisan support in the House and Senate.

The Justice Department in December 2011 said that the Wire Act of 1961 only applied to online sports betting, freeing up other forms of cyber-wagering such as online poker.

Graham said the ruling was a "huge legal stretch."

Internet gambling is controversial, with many who oppose it saying it can lead to gambling addiction.

A report by the National Gambling Impact Study said "the high-speed instant gratification of Internet games and the high level of privacy they offer may exacerbate problem and pathological gambling."
