Legendary football coach Lou Holtz, who received the Presidential Medal of Freedom earlier this week from President Donald Trump, said he thinks the biggest issue facing the nation at this time is the legal right to vote and to have their votes counted honestly.
Holtz also praised Trump as the greatest president of his lifetime, while speaking to Fox Business' Stuart Varney.
"Right now, this should scare every Democrat, every American, everybody," Holtz said. "Let's have fair elections, let's make sure that happens, and I want to be involved as best I can on that."
He added he was "blessed" to receive the Medal of Freedom from a president he respects as much as Trump, but it does not define his life.
"My life will be defined by my family, my friends, and you receive not because of what I did," Holtz said. "They give you the award, hopefully, so it will inspire other people to take up a cause. And to me, this freedom to vote to me is critical right now."
When Holtz received his honor Thursday, he called Trump the "best president'' of his lifetime, but Friday, he said he also thinks Ronald Reagan was "absolutely tremendous."
But with Trump, "he gave this country back to the people, the right to work, the right to bring jobs back here, the right to be middle class," Holtz said. "If you don't have middle-class jobs, you have absolutely no middle class. I loved Reagan, but I think you have to look back and say that President Trump had a greater influence on the lives of the American people. You look at the African-American, you look at the Hispanic vote, everybody has improved under him."
The coronavirus pandemic was "unfortunate," Holtz said, adding the vote is critical.
"If the vote is fair, great, give it to Joe Biden: God bless you," Holtz said. "But this is too critical right now. If you can't vote, you have no freedom. You don't control your life, you have no future."
