Controversy After Lesbians Win $100,000 Wedding of the Year

By    |   Monday, 25 March 2013 12:08 PM EDT

Organizers of Maine’s wedding of the year contest have sparked controversy by choosing a lesbian couple as winners of a $100,000 dream ceremony.

Jenna Eagleton and Caroline Currie of Portland, who plan to tie the knot this October in Kennebunkport, were selected for the prize.

In an attempt to forestall criticism, the organizers —  the magazine, Real Maine Weddings — warned posters on the contest’s Facebook page against making offensive comments about the winners or the event.

But some who made remarks question the contest’s authenticity.

A poster calling herself Melissa Dow charged: “It was rigged and not a real contest. They just made a really bad name for themselves.’’

The prize includes wedding dresses, tuxedos, rings, flowers, limos, a rehearsal dinner and a reception, complete with a disc jockey, wedding cake, and photographer.

The winners were announced at ta bridal show in Freeport over the weekend, The Bangor Daily News reported.

In November, Maine became one of the first three states — along with Washington and Maryland — to OK same-sex marriages by popular vote.
