New Hampshire House Rejects Recreational Marijuana Bill

By    |   Friday, 28 March 2014 08:46 AM EDT

The New Hampshire state House voted down a bill to legalize recreational marijuana, which it had passed in January, due to lack of support from the Senate and governor.

It had been the first legislative body in the country to vote for a marijuana legalization bill. Colorado and Washington legalized marijuana through ballot measures, The Washington Post reported.

In January, the bill passed the House 170 to 162 in a preliminary vote, but it couldn't get through the House Ways and Means Committee. It was voted down Wednesday 192 to 140, the Post reported.

The measure had both bipartisan support and opposition, the Post said. It was introduced by a Republican in the House, but the Republican-led state Senate vowed to kill it. Democratic Gov. Maggie Hassan, a Democrat, promised to veto the legislation.

In early February, a ballot measure to legalize recreational marijuana in Alaska collected enough signatures to make it onto an August ballot. If it passes, it will be the third state to legalize recreational marijuana.
